Inflation in Ukraine slows to 0.8% in April, to 13.1% in annual terms

The growth of consumer prices in Ukraine in April 2018 was 0.8% compared to 1.1% in March, 0.9% in February and 1.5% in January, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine has said.

According to the agency, in the annual terms (April 2018 from April 2017) the rise in consumer prices slowed to 13.1% from 13.2% in March, 14% in February and 14.1% in January.

Underlying inflation in April 2018 fell to 0.6% after a rise to 1.4% in March, returning to the level of February, but in annual terms it remained at 9.4%.

The service said that since the beginning of the year consumer prices in Ukraine have increased by 4.4%, while underlying inflation was 3.3%.

According to the agency, prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages in April rose by 1.1%. Vegetable prices rose most of all (5.4%). Prices for meat, bread, soft drinks, pasta, fish increased by 2.6-0.7%. At the same time, prices for buckwheat, eggs, milk, lard, fruits and sugar fell by 5.9-1.1%.

Prices for alcoholic drinks and tobacco products increased by 1.5%, in particular the cost of tobacco products went up by 2.1%, alcoholic drinks by 0.7%.

The growth of tariffs for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels by 0.2% was mainly due to the increase in sewage tariffs by 1.5%, water supply by 1.3%, maintenance of houses and adjacent territories by 0.4%.

The rise in fares as a whole by 0.3% was mainly caused by the rise in the cost of transportation services by 2.1%. At the same time, prices for fuel and oil fell by 0.7%.
