Finance minister doubts that land reform to be approved before election

It is unlikely that the land reform would be passed before the end of the election campaign, as it requires broad discussion, Ukrainian Finance Minister Oleksandr Danyliuk has said.

"Why not this year? It is because for some reason people believe that there is a consensus in political elites that reform is bad, and therefore communication is necessary. Personal management of this reform is required," he said at the Atlantic Council conference in Washington, D.C. on April 17.

At the same time, he said that Ukraine was close to beginning this reform in the summer of 2017, but "some unfortunate events have not allowed it to happen."

"It takes some time for the restart. We are pretty much ready for it. The only difficulty is elections. Usually we do not take into account elections, but elections are elections. They will include a wide dialogue in the country and communication... We cannot to miss this opportunity... We are going to launch [the land reform], we just need a communication campaign, and we'll see if it finds a response in society. It is necessary to explain to people why this is done. The main question is when it is necessary to do this," he said.
