Treatment of liquid radioactive waste from Chornnobyl NPP could last 29 years
It would take 29 years to treat 20,000 cubic meters of liquid radioactive waste accumulated at the site of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP), the press service of the State Agency for Exclusion Zone Management has reported.
"The expected number of radioactive waste canisters will be over 303,000… The canisters with waste are to be stored in the equipped solid radioactive waste storage at Vector complex, which can store only around 70,000 canisters from the liquid radioactive waste treatment plant," the press service said.
The agency said that over a lack of capacities for storing liquid radioactive waste, it is required to find a solution to reduce their number.
The construction of the liquid radioactive waste treatment plant is being finished. It is planned to launch the plant in December 2018.
