SBU: Chemical plant in Luhansk region pouring waste to river
Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Luhansk region has established that a chemical plant violated water basin protection rules, the press service of SBU has reported.
The enterprise was pouring chemical waste to the Siversky Donets River. This caused water pollution.
"The plant's top managers decided to save on environment protection measures and waste disposal and simply threw it into the river. A pipe was installed under water and at least since 2014 tonnes of chemicals have been poured to the Siversky Donets River. This has resulted in large pollution and change of quality of water. Thus, the plant polluted 10 km of the river area that goes to the drinking water horizons used by Rubizhne, Lysychansk, Severodonetsk and other towns," SBU said.
SBU invited environmental specialists who are calculating the damage caused to environment.
Prosecutor General's Office started a pre-trial investigation under Part 1 of Article 242 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (violation of rules related to water protection)
The investigation is underway.
