Ukraine, Latvia will closely cooperate in investigation into money laundering
The law enforcement agencies of Latvia and Ukraine should cooperate more closely in making the decision on transferring EUR 50 million, recognized as illegal funds in Ukraine, to the budget of Latvia, the presidents of the two countries have stated at a bilateral meeting in New York.
The press service of Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis said that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko during the meeting in the framework of the UN General Assembly recognized Ukraine had not provided enough information to Latvia in the investigation in the case.
Vejonis praised the Ukrainian government's determination to implement reforms in public administration and national economy and to fight against corruption, noting this takes place in difficult conditions. The president called on Ukraine to reduce barriers to Latvian investments.
He noted Latvia consistently supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, considers it unacceptable to recognize the annexation of Crimea de facto and maintains its demand for Russia to implement the Minsk agreements.
The Latvian president noted Latvia continues to support a closer integration of Ukraine into the EU and appreciates the debate in the European Parliament on the liberalization of a visa regime with Ukraine. Latvia and the EU are interested in the economically strong and democratic Ukraine, he said.
He also invited the president of Ukraine to visit Riga in 2017.
