Intl conference to collect funds for spent nuclear fuel storage facility two to take place on April 25 in Kyiv

The international conference to finish collection of funds for the completion of the project to build spent nuclear fuel storage facility two at Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) is to take place in Kyiv on April 25, Ukrainian Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Ostap Semerak has said.

"Spent nuclear fuel storage facility two is being built using donor funds that are accumulated on the special account at the EBRD [European Bank for Reconstruction and Development]. A U.S. company is building the facility. Total cost of the project is EUR 380 million. EUR 105 million is required now. The conference to collect funds for nuclear safety that will take place on April 2016 in Kyiv or next Monday will be devoted to this issue," Semerak said at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Ukraine's address to donors with a request to contribute additional funds to complete the facility will be discussed at the conference.

"Ukraine as a participant in funding is to make its own contributes and the draft resolution is being discussed now," he said, adding that EUR 5 million is to be contributed.

Semerak said that 18 current and five potential donor countries and EBRD top managers are invited to the conference.

"I hope that the conference will result in the announcement that collection of funds for spent nuclear fuel storage facility two is completed. The first practical result will be the signing of the relevant document on Tuesday, April 26. The draft resolution has been drawn up by the government. This is the supplementary agreement that would ensure an additional EUR 40 million from the EBRD out of EUR 105 million required," he said.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman will take part in the conference. He is to hold negotiations with the EBRD president and the president of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
