Government commission to probe activities of State Aviation Service of Ukraine

The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers, in response to queries made by members of the Verkhovna Rada, and at the request of the Infrastructure Ministry, will create a commission to probe the activities of the State Aviation Service of Ukraine later this week, the Infrastructure Ministry's press service has reported.

In addition, a meeting with representatives of air carriers, Ukrainian airports, the Ukrainian State Air Traffic Service Enterprise (Ukraerorukh), the State Aviation Service and the Association of Ukrainian Airlines was held at the initiative of the Infrastructure Ministry on March 26.

"The annexation of Crimea, the difficult situation in the east of the country, the fall of the hryvnia, the restriction of currency transactions, to name only a few of the negative factors which affect the air transportation market, hits the wallets of Ukrainians and complicates the work of Ukrainian businesses. This resulted in the fall in passenger traffic, in the fall in the number of flights, and in the number of routes," the Infrastructure Ministry said.

The meeting participants put forward a number of proposals on how to resolve the situation, including multimodal transportation, amending taxation on aircraft fuel, and creating a system of discounts by airports for airlines.

All the participants welcomed the ministry's initiative to open routes for airlines of several European countries while Ukraine is waiting for the signing of an agreement on common air space.
