EC: Ukraine has enough gas sources until it reaches new deal with Russia
The European Commission believes that Ukraine has sufficient options to supply itself with gas to the summer until trilateral gas negotiations between the European Union, Russia and Ukraine lead to an agreement, EC spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen told reporters in Brussels on Monday.
Gas reserves in Ukrainian gas storage facilities are currently at 7.8 billion cubic meters. They could drop to 6.5 bcm by the middle of April, but the weather is getting warmer and hopefully Ukraine will be able to make do with domestic gas production and reverse supplies of gas from Slovakia, Hungary and Poland until the summer, Itkonen said when asked if Ukraine would be able to manage in the coming months with its reduced gas reserves if an agreement with Russia is expected only by the summer.
Negotiations will continue and the next meeting will hopefully be held soon, Itkonen said, adding that there is still time to come to an agreement.
