The U.S. assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, Victoria Nuland, on Tuesday expressed support for the Southern Gas Corridor project, arguing it is important for all European countries as well as Azerbaijan.
Nuland, who was speaking at a briefing in Baku, also expressed satisfaction with a meeting she had with Azeri President Ilham Aliyev earlier on Tuesday.
"We want to … continue to cooperate [with Azerbaijan] in the fields of security, economy, energy, and, as much as possible make efforts in the scope of democracy," Azeri website Contact.az quoted Nuland as saying.
She said she and Aliyev had discussed cooperation under peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Kosovo, joint action against terrorism and extremism, and a proposal for raising Azeri peacekeeper training standards.
