Ukraine's public from early September buys $230 mln more cash foreign currency than sells
Ukraine's population since early September has bought $230 million more cash foreign currency than it sold, while in August it was about $200 million more, the director of the general department for monetary and credit policy at the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Olean Scherbakova, has said.
"Since the beginning of September and as of today we have minus $230 million," she said at a press conference.
According to Scherbakova, the net purchase of foreign currency in cash by Ukrainians in September could reach $250 million.
"To say that the situation is difficult - it's like saying nothing. The population is agitated," she said.
According to Scherbakova, the complexity of the situation forced the NBU to resort to the introduction of restrictions on the sale of foreign currency in cash at the equivalent of UAH 3,000 per capita a day.
She noted that the NBU intends to follow the market's reaction to this restriction for a week, and only then decide on the next steps.
She also stated a further outflow of deposits: given the exchange rate changes its sum is estimated at UAH 104 billion in January-August.
