Uzbek airline cancels flights to Kyiv

National Air Company Uzbekistan Airways cancelled shuttle flights between Tashkent and Kyiv starting April 1.

"The force majeure circumstances result from the lack of permits from the Ukrainian aviation authorities," the airline said on Wednesday.

It promised that passengers could book other tickets or get a refund without paying penalties.

Ukraine has not commented on reasons for cancellation of the flights.

It was reported in November 2013 that Uzbekistan Airways might stop performing regular flights on the Tashkent-Kyiv route. The alleged reason is the conflict with Ukraine International Airlines (UIA), which was pressuring Uzbek partners with support from the aviation authorities and the Foreign Ministry "for concrete slots [permission to fly on certain days and in certain hours] at the Tashkent International Airport."

Uzbekistan Airways, the monopoly airline in Uzbekistan, is owned by the national government. It flies to 21 cities in Europe, America, the Middle East and Asia, 22 cities of the CIS and eleven local destinations.
