Yatseniuk says weakening of hryvnia exchange rate to UAH 11/$1 is natural
The weakening of the official exchange rate of the hryvnia against the dollar to UAH 11 per U.S. dollar is natural, given the difficult financial and economic and political situation in the country, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.
"The dollar exchange rate has been in almost the same parameters over the past three weeks: plus or minus 11. This is an absolutely natural phenomenon when there is uncertainty on the market and Russian tanks on the border. Of course, there is some nervousness," he said at an investment conference on Wednesday.
He also said that the Ukrainian authorities had managed to prevent the actual collapse of the hryvnia against the dollar in the post-revolutionary period.
"In future the exchange rate will depend on how funds are received from the International Monetary Fund and other financial institutions, and how quickly. Once an additional 'cushion' for international reserves is created, it will immediately be much easier for us to manage work with the exchange rate," he said.
The official exchange rate on April 2 was UAH 11.1062/$1.
