Azarov: Ukraine to sign only beneficial agreements
The Ukrainian authorities are continuing Ukraine's course for European integration, but they will sign only the agreements that meet the interests of the country and Ukrainians, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.
"The Ukrainian government and the president are continuing the EU integration course, but, first and foremost, we all need to act and sign any agreements and arrangements in the interests of Ukraine and its people," he wrote in a blog on his personal Web site.
Azarov urged Ukrainians to think rationally in this situation, and not to succumb to the populist slogans of opposition leaders.
"And how can't we remember the opposition leaders who are responsible for the signing of a one-sided agreement in 2009? Now, even after the signing of a package of agreements yesterday [on December 17], they are continuing their destructive activity, trying to destabilize the political situation in the country. They should have reduced their political ambitions and told the truth from the stage that the signing of an Association Agreement with the EU would have currently led to irreparable losses for Ukraine," he said.
