Saakashvili's defense team not given documents collected during investigation

The lawyer of Mikheil Saakashvili, the leader of the New Forces Movement and ex-governor of Odesa region, says the defense team has not been given documents based on which investigations into their client were held.

"Today, you have seen how dictatorship is being cemented in Ukraine, how the rule of law is being violated, how lawyers are not allowed to defend constitutional rights. This morning, we as lawyers were not let in to defend Saakashvili," Ruslan Chornolutsky said at a rally outside the Verkhovna Rada on Tuesday.

"To date, not a single document related to the proceedings has been given us to see on what ground the investigative action and inquiries were conducted," Chornolutsky said.

He also asked Ukrainian judges "not to make unfair decisions or criminal determinations."

This morning, law-enforcement officers came to search Saakashvili's home address at 7 Kostelna Street, apprehended the politician on the roof of the building, escorted him out, and put him in a police van. Activists tried to stop these activities by scuffling with the officers. They stood in the way of the van and later they blocked the vehicle on Triokhsviatytelska Street.
