Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine invited to return to Tbilisi for consultations on resolving situation with Saakashvili – MFA

On July 4, following the order of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has summoned the Ambassador of Georgia to Ukraine George Zakarashvili to express its strong protest in connection with the significant deterioration of health condition of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili imprisoned in Georgia.

“The Georgian diplomat was emphasized that such an attitude towards Mikheil Saakashvili is absolutely unacceptable. The Georgian authorities must stop abusing the citizen of Ukraine,” the comment published by the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine reads.

In this regard, it was proposed to Ambassador of Georgia to Ukraine George Zakarashvili to return to Tbilisi for consultations to find ways of solving the situation.

The Ukrainian side emphasized its readiness to discuss urgently the issue of transferring Mikheil Saakashvili to Ukraine for treatment and medical care.

On July 3, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the Foreign Ministry to summon the Georgian Ambassador to Kyiv and voice a protest to him in connection with the ongoing imprisonment of ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili. Zelenskyy also instructed the Foreign Ministry to invite the ambassador to leave Ukraine within 48 hours for consultations.

Later, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that in the morning the Georgian ambassador would be at the Foreign Ministry, there would be a tough conversation with him, he would go to Georgia. He also stressed that the Georgian authorities want to bring the imprisoned ex-President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili to death.

"We believe that Georgia should stop bullying Mikheil Saakashvili and return him to us, since he is a citizen of Ukraine," Kuleba said.
