Saakashvili associate Dangadze arrested near Lubny, evidence of Kurchenko bribe seized

An associate of the New Forces Movement led by ex-Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili, Severion Dangadze, has been detained attempting to flee Ukraine. Law-enforcement officials said they seized documents from him documenting payment from Serhiy Kurchenko, an ex-crony of disgraced ex-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, head of Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) Yuriy Lutsenko said during a press briefing in Kyiv on Friday.

"It has been established that [Dangadze] was travelling in a car of friend and trying to flee Ukraine, driving fast from Kyiv in the direction of Russia. At the police station near Lubny [Poltava region] he was detained by PGO agents, and later by Ukrainian SBU Security Service agents," Lutsenko said.

"Dangadze was detained and questioned. He has been served with a notice of suspicion and will be served another one. He is suspected of violating Article 110 of Ukraine's Criminal Code (treason) and Article 256 (assisting members of a criminal organization and hiding its criminal activity)," the PGO chief said.

Lutsenko said attempts were made on December 2, 2017 to detain Dangadze in Lviv, however he fled and police were able only to arrest his accomplice.

"His name is Nazar. He works as a consultant in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine committee for anti-corruption policy. He was detained with a bag full of documents showing what Kurchenko's money was spent on … on bus transportation, television coverage, power and bribes, including bribes to journalists," Lutsenko said.

The PGO chief also said that during searches of apartments where Dangadze lived many materials were found, including a copy of Saakashvili's Ukrainian passport.
