Donbas settlement, fight against corruption, energy discussed at meeting with Mitchell

Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs, MP Hanna Hopko has said that the activities of anti-corruption bodies in Ukraine, the peaceful settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine, reform of Naftogaz Ukrainy and the problem of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project were discussed at a meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell in Kyiv.

According to an Interfax-Ukraine reporter, the meeting with the U.S. diplomat was held in Kyiv on Tuesday, November 14.

"We discussed the peaceful settlement of the situation in the east of Ukraine, the activity in which [U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations] Kurt Volker is engaged. What is important for Ukraine is to see some concrete results, given that the shelling continues and there has long been a desire in Ukrainian society to see some progress in international efforts," she told Interfax-Ukraine.

Hopko noted Mitchell had asked about the situation in eastern Ukraine.

She also said that it was stated at the meeting that anti-corruption institutions in Ukraine should be independent and have the financial ability to work effectively. The fight against corruption and the situation with reforms in Ukraine were also discussed.

"I raised these issues [on anti-corruption activity], as well as the situation with the NACP [National Agency on Corruption Prevention]... the issue of strengthening these institutions, their political independence. We see various attempts of a selective approach [in checks on electronic income declarations] through different political influence," the politician said.

Hopko said that it was important to prevent the selective approach of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention during the verification of e-declarations, as well as to launch an automated system for their verification.

"We said that it was extremely important for Ukraine to secure [the independence of] these institutions," she added.

"We also talked about energy, Naftogaz reform, Nord Stream 2, that Russia's monopoly on the EU market bypassing Ukraine takes away an important lever for a peaceful settlement," she said.

According to Hopko, the meeting with Mitchell took place in the format of a dinner, but she did not specify which Ukrainian politicians or public figures also attended the event.

At the same time, according to the website of the People's Front party, party leader Arseniy Yatsenyuk also met with Mitchell on Tuesday.

"I appreciate the words of Wess Mitchell that cooperation with Ukraine is one of his top priorities, and I'm grateful for the assurances of his readiness to give a new impetus to the most active involvement of the U.S. government in the processes of changes in our country, the protection of our independence, security and support for its European course," the party's press service quoted Yatseniuk as saying.
