Council of Europe welcomes media reforms in Ukraine

The Council of Europe welcomes this year success of reforming media in Ukraine and hopes that the reforms would continue, Special Advisor of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on Ukraine Christos Giakoumopoulos has said.

"As a special advisor on Ukraine I welcome the adoption of the important laws as the law on transparency of media ownership and privatization of municipal printed media," Giakoumopoulos said at the conference devoted to media in Ukraine, its achievements and top-priority reforms held in Kyiv on Thursday.

He also welcomed the revision of the law on audio visual services, the launch of the public broadcasting service under European standards, measures to strengthen the potential of the institution of ombudsman in the area of access to public information and protection of personal data, as well as the further development of the potential of the national commission for television and radio broadcasting via designing methods for media monitoring.

Giakoumopoulos said that measures under the Strengthening Information Society in Ukraine project coordinated by the Council of European and the European Union fully comply with the national strategy for human rights signed by the Ukrainian president in September 2015 and the Council of Europe's Action Plan for Ukraine 2015-2017.
