If local elections in Donbas canceled, authority of local councils should be terminated – Rada Deputy Chairperson

If the local elections in Donetsk and Luhansk regions in autumn, 2015 are cancelled, the authority of local councils on the territory should be terminated, Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oksana Syroid has said.

"When heads of military-civilian administrations say that elections can't be held, [we] might agree with that, with one condition that local council will completely cease to exist. There's still a city council consisting solely of Regions Party members in Sloviansk. You know Mariupol's mayor and his position… Therefore we can't leave people with these local councils," Syroid said at a press conference in Kharkiv on Tuesday.

She reminded that Samopomich faction's MPs prepared and introduced in the parliament the bill foreseeing local elections in a number of localities in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where "people want new local councils."

"Localities, where Ukraine's control has been regained, where there's a high rise of public movement, where people want to renew local councils (for example, Sloviansk, Mariupol), [have] people that can't be denied the opportunity to reelect local councils today," Syroid said.

In addition, the bill excludes the possibility of elections on the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, in localities close to the contact line and districts with military-civilian administrations.

As reported, earlier heads of Donetsk and Luhansk regional military-civilian administrations Pavlo Zherbivsky and Heorhiy Tuka spoke against holding local elections in autumn.

In addition, Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Andriy Nehera said that the elections should be held in as much Ukraine-controlled localities of Donbas as possible. He's sure of the necessity of the elections, particularly of Donetsk and Luhansk local council deputies.
