Council decides to remove all Soviet monuments from Melitopol

The town council of Melitopol, Zaporizhia region, on Friday passed a resolution to purge the city of all monuments that are "symbols of the communist totalitarian regime" by July 1.

The "main Lenin" is to be taken to the backyard of a local museum and the other monuments must be stored in a warehouse. They are to stay there until the city community decides during public debates what to do with them.

The removal process is to be overseen by the council commission on architectural and construction affairs.

Among the communist leaders the monuments commemorate are Konstantin Bronzos, who in 1917 headed the city committee of the communist party, Sergei Kirov, Mikhail Frunze and Nikolai Pakhomov, and the fate of the monuments will be decided at public discussions.
