Security and Defense Council accepts presidential amendments to martial law legislation – Turchynov

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov said that the Council had accepted amendments initiated by the Ukrainian president to the law on the legal regime of martial law.

"The first decision, which has been passed, concerns the situation in the east of Ukraine and additional measures to strengthen national security. Taking into account the danger existing today in our state and a constant breach of the peace agreements by Russian terrorist groups, it [decision] foresees the approval of the amendments to the law on the legal regime of martial law," Turchynov said at a briefing after the NSDC meeting on Wednesday evening.

The respective law was passed many years ago, but it doesn't correspond to the current reality, according to Turchynov.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko earlier said that amendments to legislation on martial law had been drafted by that time, adding that he hoped the document would be backed both by parliament and the NSDC.

"I ordered to draw up a draft bill on amendments to legislation on martial law. It considers experience and peculiarities of hybrid war, which is now being smoothly translating into the large-scale warfare we've been facing for many months," Poroshenko said at the NSDC meeting on Wednesday.
