Demobilization in Ukraine to begin on March 18

Demobilization in Ukraine will take place in the period between March 18, 2015 and May 1, 2015, Andriy Lysenko, spokesman for the anti-terrorist operation in Donbas, said.

"The military members who have served their time, that is, one year from the time they were conscripted in spring 2014 are to be discharged from military service and demobilized in accordance with a presidential decree. It should generally happen no later than ten days prior to the year they have spent in military service, he told Interfax on Wednesday.

Lysenko reiterated that "demobilization will take place in waves, without reducing the combat potential of the Armed Forces and other military units where conscripts were called up. After new conscripts arrive, mobilized citizens who have served their time will be discharged. No one will detain them there."

Responding to a question about how many conscripts will be discharged, Lysenko said: "We do not disclose the numbers."

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko earlier said he intends to sign a decree on demobilization. At the same time, the demobilization period is stated in the presidential decree on partial mobilization. The decree states that conscripts who were called up for military service for a special period under presidential Decree № 303 On Partial Mobilization will be discharged in the period between March 18, 2015 and May 1, 2015.
