Foreign Ministry: Memorandum with EEC not a sign of Ukraine's changing its foreign policy course

The signing of a memorandum on deepening cooperation between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) cannot be regarded as a change in Kyiv's foreign policy course, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has said.

"The signing of the memorandum cannot be regarded as a change in Ukraine's foreign policy course, and European integration remains a strategic priority for us," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Yevhen Perebyinis said at a briefing on Tuesday.

He said that this document is not an international agreement and does not envisage legal obligations for the Ukrainian side.

"The memorandum does not include provisions that would envisage the prospects of Ukraine's accession to the Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Space, or the transfer by Ukraine of its sovereign powers in the sphere of foreign trade policy to the supranational structures of these organizations," Perebyinis said.

As reported, on May 31 in Minsk, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and Chairman of the Eurasian Economic Commission's Board Viktor Khristenko signed a memorandum on deepening cooperation between Ukraine and the Eurasian Economic Commission. The memorandum envisages Ukraine's participation in the work of the Eurasian Economic Commission and its bodies.
