Head of Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) Oleksandr Popov has said he is confident that he has already done enough for the capital city and its residents to claim victory in the mayoral election in Kyiv.

"I don't only believe that I have all of the grounds to participate in the mayoral election, but I'm also confident of victory. I hope that all candidates will be worthy opponents," he said in an interview with the Segodnya newspaper, which was published on Friday.

He again said that he plans to participate in the election.

"I have already announced my decision to participate in the mayoral election in Kyiv. It was [a] well thought-out and weighted [decision], and I'm not planning to change my mind. Kyiv needs the election and it needs a democratically elected mayor, who, relying on the trust of residents of Kyiv, will defend their interests at all levels. I'm doing it now, but the support of local citizens in the election will help achieve better results," Popov said.

As reported, a five-year term of office for Kyiv mayor and for Kyiv City Council deputies expires in late May 2013. At the insistence of the opposition, the parliament several times considered the draft decision to set the date for the election in Kyiv, but pro-government factions are refusing to support this decision, citing the need to get the conclusion of the Constitutional Court about the peculiarities of this election.
