Putin murder plot suspect fears for his life

3 min read

The main suspect in an alleged assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Adam Osmayev, has said he fears that special services of Ukraine and Russia are planning to kill him.

"I am demanding that the law is observed on the territory of Ukraine, and request that all necessary measures be taking within the Ukrainian legislation and the international law," Osmayev's wife, Amina Okuyeva, said while reading aloud Osmayev's statement at a press conference in Kyiv on Monday.

Osmayev's statement reads that the criminal case against him was fabricated and the evidentiary foundation of the special services was illogical and not in line with basic legal regulations and procedures.

"When the special services [Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and Ukraine Security Service (SBU)] saw that the trial was not following their scenario, I think, they started to prepare for my physical elimination. They added to my case a note "disposed to escape," which is an absolutely groundless and untrustworthy invention of the FSB and SBU," reads the statement.

The accused also said that a psychologist came to him, in order to "form a scientific basis for my psychological instability and my inclination to escape or suicide."

Osmayev stated that he has no inclination to escape or suicide or any other actions that could cause harm to his health or life.

"I never thought of such things and will never think about them in future," he said.

In turn, Osmayev's lawyer Olha Chertok said that the statement will be sent to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and to the administration of the special services and the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine.

According to the lawyer, the trial on Osmayev will end in July-August 2013. The next hearing of the case was scheduled for March 18. The lawyer said she doubted that the court would acquit her client.

Chertok also said that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will issue its ruling on her client's appeal not sooner than in a year or year and a half.

In turn, Okuyeva stressed that in case the court pleads Osmayev guilty they will appeal to the ECHR against the ruling.

As reported, Prymorsky Court in Odesa considers the criminal case against Osmayev, who is the main suspect and accused in in assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The court brought charges against Osmayev under five articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. In particular, Osmayev is accused of being a member of a terrorist organization, of having organized a terror act against a high official, of having organized a blast in which people were killed and property was damaged, and of storing explosive substances and use of forged documents.
