Ukraine boosts imports of coking coal by 19% in 2016, coke imports 8% down

Coking plants in Ukraine imported 11.8 million tonnes of coking coal and coal concentrate in 2016, which is 19% or 1.9 million tonnes up from a year ago.

The Ukrmetallurgprom association (Dnipro) told Interfax-Ukraine that in December 1.1 million tonnes of coal was imported – 240,000 tonnes more than in November.

Some 5.8 million tonnes of Ukrainian coal was supplied to coking plants, which is 2% or 140,000 tonnes down on 2015. In December, 400,000 tonnes of Ukrainian coal was shipped, which is 40,000 less than in November.

Ending coking coal stocks fell by 50,000 tonnes in December, being around 300,000 tonnes as of January 1, 2017.

In 2016, Ukrainian coking plants received 17.6 million tonnes of coal for coking. This is 11% or 1.7 million tonnes more than in 2015. In December 1.5 million tonnes of coal was supplied. The share of imported coal was 67%.

In 2016 coking plans supplied 10.7 million tonnes of coke to metal companies, which is 11% more than in 2015. In December, coke supplies fell by 11,000 tonnes compared to November, to 820,000 tonnes.

A total of 1.2 million tonnes of imported coke was delivered in 2016, which is 8% down year-over-year. In December, 90,000 tonnes of coke was imported.

Total coke supply to metal companies in 2016 reached 11.9 million tonnes, which his 8% up on 2015.
