Poroshenko unhappy with targets of Defense Ministry's budget, hopes budget will be revised

Ukraine will increase expenses on development of armaments and military equipment in 2016, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

"In coming days the parliament will consider the draft national budget for 2016. Am I happy with the figures the government has proposed? No. I think we will manage to revise them, Stepan Tymofiyivych [Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak]," he said on December 4, before the awarding ceremony on the occasion of the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

He said that the minimum needs of the armed forces outlined in the decision of the National Security and Defense Council will be met.

"I understand and I ask everyone to understand that the economy would not cope with more. Now the economy is pressed by war to the ground level, including the economic aggression started by Russia against our country," he said, adding that Russia has closed its markets for most Ukrainian producers.

The head of state said that Ukraine will increase efficiency of using the funds and change the structure of the defense budget.

"First of all, this concerns the increase of expenses on development of armaments and military equipment from 15% in 2014 to 21% in 2016," he said.

The president said that it is planned to increase expenses for training of soldiers from 3% to 6% and increase the training intensiveness.

He also said that the salaries of military servicemen are increased in the draft national budget.

"From UAH 14 billion in 2014 to UAH 30 billion next year," he said.
