Poroshenko thanks UEFA president for banning football championships in Crimea
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has met with the delegation of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) led by UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin.
During the meeting, Poroshenko noted the UEFA's principled position regarding the prohibition of official football competitions in the occupied Crimea and urged Ceferim to adhere to that position in the future, the presidential press service reported.
"Aleksander Ceferin assured that the UEFA's position on Crimea will remain unchanged," the statement reads.
Poroshenko also thanked the UEFA for its financial assistance in social integration of internally displaced children in Ukraine as part of cooperation with the UEFA Foundation for Children. The president emphasized that more than 200,000 children from Ukraine lost their homes as a result of the Russian aggression in Donbas.
The UEFA president congratulated Ukraine on hosting the 2018 UEFA Champions League Finals in Kyiv. "He expressed confidence that this football event will become the best gift for football lovers and Ukrainian fans," the statement reads.
