Global Leaders Convene at Second Energy Security Forum in Monaco

The International energy sectoris going through major global transformations drivenby technological revolution, environmental and geopolitical challenges. For the second year in a row, the Forum on EnergySecurityfortheFuture: newvision, strategy, innovationbrought together global leaders, including politicians, opinion makers and businesspeople. Organized by Burisma Group in partnership with the Adam Smith Conferences, and with support from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Alexander Kwasniewski Foundation Amicus Europae, the Forum was held on June 2, 2017 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. The event addressed Europe’s energy security withfocus on Ukraine’s increasing role in the European energy market. “The processes taking place in the EU automatically affect Ukraine and vice versa. Such events allow Ukrainian and European leaders to share their views and expectations, as well as define instruments required to obtain European energy independence”,noted the President of Burisma Group NikolayZlochevskyi. In attendance from the Ukrainian side were the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine VolodymyrKistion,the Head of the Committee on Taxation and Customs Policy at the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Nina Yuzhanina, as well as representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers, Ministries and Departments. The Forum startedwith welcoming remarks from His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, followed by keynote addresses from the President of Slovenia (2007–2012) DaniloTürkand the Prime Minister of Belgium (1999–2008) and the Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe GroupGuy Verhofstadt. The panelists of the keynote session included the Vice Prime Ministerof Ukraine VolodymyrKistion,the Director of the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center (1999-2002)and Ambassador at Largefor Counter-Terrorism (2002-2004) Joseph Cofer Black, the European Commissioner for Energy (2004 and 2009) AndrisPiebalgs, and the Director of the Atlantic CouncilDina PatriciuEurasia Center and the US Ambassador to Ukraine (2003-2006) John E. Herbst. They focused on the role of institutions instrengtheningEuropean energy security. The analytical market debate, moderated by the EU PlattscorrespondentSiobhan Hall, placed special emphasis onlatest trendsaffectingthe European energy market, including energy landscape changes, supply and demand dynamics and energy consumption mapping. The conference followedwith discussions on regional perspective for European energy security andthe development of effective energy infrastructure betweenthe Deputy Minister for EuropeanIntegration at the Ministry of Energy and CoalIndustry of Ukraine NataliyaBoyko, the Member of the Board of the Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) and Member at the ACER Board of RegulatorsNektariaKarakatsani, the Energy expert and Former Minister for Energy of Romania Victor Grigosescu,the CEO of the private equity investment fund PGK Ltd in Poland Bartosz Soroczynski andthe Senior Researcher at Globsec Policy Institute inSlovakia Kristian Takac. The Forum ended with a session on creating a right energy mix for the clean and secure future. The President at GERG Isabelle Moretti delivered a presentation on the current gas market situation and its challenges. The Dean of the Centre for Energy Expertise at HanzeUniversity of Applied SciencesJan-JaapAuétalked about energy market innovations. The expert on energy markets, finance,and Associate Professor at the ESCP Europe Business SchoolKostas Andriosopoulos focused on EastMed and its impact in the region. The Policy Adviser at EurogasTim Cayfordclosed the Forum with the presentation on the European energy paradigm. “This event goes in line with our corporate objectives, but most importantly, it reflects values and principles that we, at Burisma Group, stand by: integrity, social responsibility and innovation.
