3 min read

Ukrainian aviation industry, which had previously been quite problematic and controversial in 2014 was faced with another test.

According to experts, the Ukrainian air transport market in the first half of 2014 decreased to almost half. Industry lost part of passenger traffic because of annexation of the Crimea, a significant part by reason of closure of airports in Donetsk and Luhansk. Amount of business-passengers was reduced, that caused decreasing of need for charter flights. The situation has worsened due to the increase in the cost of tickets, that was caused, first of all, by exchange rate fluctuations. Almost all air carriers operating in Ukraine, reduced route networks and turned a number of areas, also airspace of Ukraine was considered as unsafe because of the Boeing 777 disaster.

Besides, "adds fuel to the fire" the current situation with the appointment of routes both within the country and to international destinations. Many carriers talk about monopolization of the market and the lack of transparency in activities of relevant government agencies. Also new procedure of the appointment of air carriers for airline caused many disputes and debate. On the one hand, officials say the document is intended to contribute to the development of domestic flights and competitive environment, on the other - representatives of industry, who claim that the document strangles the market and does not allow new airlines enter the market of Ukraine.

All of the above factors negatively affect the development of the industry and further aggravation of the situation can paralyze Ukrainian aviation market. This situation has a negative impact not only on the market players, but also ordinary passengers.

In order to avoid deterioration of the situation and reach a compromise that will satisfy all parties of the conflict, on December 17, 2014 will be held round table "Ukrainian aviation market: the struggle for survival."
