KYIV. Feb 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) - In Ukraine, not only women and children are affected by the conflict in the east of the country, but also people of advanced years who do not receive pensions from the state, Deputy Representative at UNHCR Ukraine Noel Calhoun has said.

"We often say that the victims of war are women and children, but older people suffer from the conflict in Ukraine too ... According to the Pension Fund, as of the end of November 2017, almost 650,000 people do not receive pensions in an uncontrolled territory. The number of those, who receive pensions now - only 40% of those who received pensions at the beginning of 2014, that is, the state stopped paying pensions and more people were left without food," said Calhoun at a press conference in the press center agency Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Friday.

In turn, advocacy coordinator from 'Right to Protection' Daryna Tolkach informed about the successful experience of appealing the decision of the Pension Fund of Ukraine to terminate the payment of a pension to a temporarily displaced person, currently residing in Severodonetsk. The final decision was made on January 30, 2018 by the Supreme Court of Ukraine.

"We consider very important the decisions of the Supreme Court in a separate category of cases related to the provision of pensions for internally displaced persons ... At the same time, we express hope that in future the courts will adhere to the letter of the law and adhere to the Supreme Court's position on this particular category of cases," Tolkach said.
