Kuleba calls on UN Council to make every effort to hold Russia accountable for crimes against Ukraine

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba took part in the High-level Segment of the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council and urged those present to make every effort to hold Russia accountable for its crimes against the Ukrainian people, the press service of the ministry reports.

"The Foreign Minister reminded officials of the UN member states that since the beginning of the temporary occupation of Crimea, Russian occupiers have unacceptably persecuted, oppressed and seriously violated the rights of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars, and the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022 only became the culmination of a decade-long Russian aggression against Ukraine," the Ministry said on the website of the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

Kuleba added that all those who resist the Russian occupation remain the target of the aggressor country's authorities, and enemy control over Crimea is a threat to the entire Black Sea region. In addition, the minister drew attention to serious human rights violations in all temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.

"The abduction of children is one of the most terrible crimes of the Russian Federation during the aggression against Ukraine. Every criminal involved in this genocidal policy must be brought to justice," Kuleba stressed.

He also called on the UN Council to extend for another year the mandate of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry in Ukraine, the creation of which the Foreign Minister considers a decisive and timely response to Russian aggression and an important step to ensure the necessary documentation of all crimes of the Russian Federation.

During his speech, Kuleba confirmed the desire of the Ukrainian state to create a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, as well as an international compensation mechanism for victims of aggression by the Russian Federation.

"I urge you to work with us to make every effort to hold Russia accountable for its crimes against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people," he stressed.

The minister also called for continued international support for the Ukrainian Peace Formula, which, according to him, remains "the only realistic plan to achieve a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace in Ukraine," as well as support for the future inaugural Global Peace Summit.

"We call on the UN member states to join international efforts to implement the principles of the Peace Formula and create peace in which the use of force will be unthinkable, and human rights and human dignity will be of paramount importance," the Foreign Minister concluded.
