Lithuanian FM: Partners should declare goal of supporting Ukraine to be its victory in war

The goal of supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia should be defined more specifically – this is a victory for Ukraine, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said at the Ukrainian Breakfast organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday.

"It would be good, speaking about messages to Putin, to commit not just to support Ukraine as long as it takes, but as change it to the victory and change to whatever it takes," he said.

Landsbergis said the current support for Ukraine with weapons is insufficient. He gave the example of Poland, which is actively developing its own defense industry, purchasing 1,000 U.S. Abrams tanks, 500 HIMARS systems and about 40 Patriot systems.

"Poland is roughly of the same size and the same population as in Ukraine, and Poland has an Article 5 [of the NATO charter]. So it gives you an idea of what a military planner is planning to have in case Russia attacks," the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, pointing out on the need to increase support for Ukraine by an order of magnitude.

He said Europe united during the COVID shock and pledged to allocate EUR 700 billion for recovery.

"So when someone saying now that we are unable, it is too tough, it is impossible, I would say we just not taking this seriously enough, unfortunately," Landsbergis said.

Co-founder and co-chairman of The Carlyle Group David Rubenstein noted that in the long history of European wars, each country that was attacked asked other countries to provide forces to help.

"Ukraine hasn't asked to send military troops from the United States, England or France. We all owe it to Ukraine that it did not ask," he said.

Polish President Andrzej Duda said we are witnessing the revival of Russian imperialism in its bloodthirsty version.

"What is the most dangerous is the fact that as the war in Ukraine progresses, we are witnessing the construction of a coalition of evil which is not only favour to Putin. The security model which we have tried to build since the end of the Cold War was destroyed before our eyes. The foundations of the free world, such as freedom, dignity and democracy have numerous enemies. If Putin prevails in Ukraine, it will send a clear signal to the whole world, to all his supporters," the Polish president said.

He said Russia is escalating the conflict and is ready to wage a war of attrition in the hope that the West will become tired, reduce its support and pressure Kyiv to start peace talks.

Duda called for preparations for a long march and to help Ukraine at the expense of Russian assets.

He also said the decision on potential peace negotiations should be made only by Ukrainians, and not by any external players on behalf of Ukraine.

"The war will come to an end when we have driven Russians out of all Ukrainian occupied territories. Any other solution would mean Russia's victory, and please remember this: Russia will not stop on Ukraine. Other countries in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia might become Russia's next victim. I am absolutely sure if Russia wins this war, Russia will attack the next country, they will attack and attack again. Ukraine has to win this war," the Polish president said, calling it a duty to help Ukrainian friends.
