Kuleba: Europe has to build up its defense industry, if Putin attacks EU tomorrow, it to be unable to defend itself

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba noted the importance of the EU building up its defense industry and drew a parallel with the need to create Airbus in the defense industry.

"I understand that this is not what people want to hear, but if Putin attacked the European Union tomorrow, the EU will not be able to defend itself. It will fall because the current state of the defense industry in the EU does not allow it to properly defend itself," Kuleba said during a discussion program in Davos on Wednesday.

He said Europe must grow its defense industry as the problem Europe faces will not end when Ukraine wins.

"For the coming decades, it is necessary to guarantee the security of Europe. And they simply cannot do this now," the foreign minister said.

According to him, every country that increases its own production does not solve the problem, since joint efforts by the EU are needed to remove bureaucratic barriers, harmonize the legal framework, and synchronize technical standards.

"We need Airbus in the defense industry. There are hundreds and thousands of companies involved in creating Airbus. Everyone uses the same legal framework, the same technical standards. And that's why it works. We need the same level of interaction, cooperation between the defense industries. If this problem is not solved, we will still win, but at a much, much higher cost, and it will take much longer," Kuleba said.
