Herbst: If West keeps its stance, Kremlin loses

The current aggressive Kremlin policy poses a threat to the U.S. national interests. At the same time, if Western countries continue their united stand opposing russia, the Kremlin will inevitably lose, Ambassador John Herbst, Director of Eurasia Center, Atlantic Council, United States Ambassador to Ukraine in 2003-2006 believes.

"We are talking about the threat to American interests arising from the current Kremlin’s foreign policy. The problem of russian aggression is not limited to Ukraine. And the response should be a powerful American policy in coordination with our allies and partners, to curb russia’s aggressive policy,” Ambassador Herbst said during a special event of the Kyiv Security Forum, founded by the Arseniy Yatsenyuk Open Ukraine Foundation.

At the same time, in his opinion, there is practically no opportunity to influence internal transformations in Russia from the outside.

“If we keep our stance, the Kremlin loses, and changes in russia will take place, and this could actually bring changes so that Russia would want to live in peace with its neighbors. There is such an opportunity,” Ambassador Herbst emphasized.
