More than 60,000 buildings with a total area of 8.6 million square meters were damaged to varying degrees by the blowing up of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant dam by the Russian occupation forces, Manager of Reform Support Projects at Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) Maksym Nefyodov has said.

"Our team has completed the calculation of flooded area as a result of a terrorist attack at the Kakhovka HPP. Some 60,500 buildings with a total area of 8.59 million square meters. This is the same as 14 Pentagons or 34 Empire State Buildings in area. Fortunately, three quarters of this was flooded by approximately up to a meter, so there is hope that they can be repaired relatively easily," he said, citing data from a joint study by the KSE Institute, Vox Ukraine and Azenzus-Vision, funded by the European Union.

The damaged buildings include 5.8 million square meters residential and non-residential premises, 1.6 million square meters of industrial buildings, 902,900 of infrastructure facilities, 133,900 square meters of educational institutions, 45,300 square meters of medical institutions.

According to Nefyodov, the study used satellite images from MAXAR and Sentinel-2, as well as geodata from various sources and altitude data from NASA Digital Elevation Model. This made it possible to assess the types of buildings affected, their area and the level of flooding.
