European Parliament's President Metsola: Blow to Russian economy should be proportional to unprecedented cruelty of Russian occupiers

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola says it is necessary to develop a strategy, the implementation of which will hit the Russian economy in proportion to the unprecedented brutality of the war waged by Russia against Ukraine.

Opening the plenary meeting in Strasbourg on Monday, she said that Ukraine is fighting for European values in the most impossible conditions, and the EU must support them. Concretely, this means that the European Parliament urgently need to adopt a new package of tough sanctions. The European Parliament must go after those who play a role in supporting Putin and close the gaps that still exist. Putin's oligarchs and all members of his political party must not find a place to hide, Metsola said.

The President of the European Parliament also believes that the EU should start working on a strategy to make this illegal invasion the most expensive mistake the Kremlin has ever made. The blow to the Russian economy must be proportional to the unprecedented brutality that the EU sees. The EU companies need to look elsewhere for growth, and this the European Parliament will support. Europe must accelerate its policy of zero dependence on the Kremlin, and all of Europe on Russian energy supplies, the European Parliament must implement a mandatory embargo (on energy) and stop the indirect financing of these bombs, the politician said.

In addition, Metsola spoke in favor of providing even greater support to Ukraine. That means logistical assistance, more humanitarian aid and more military equipment, which Ukraine desperately need. Ukraine is fighting for Europe and is waiting for help from Europe, the President of the European Parliament said.
