The UK authorities are banning the exports of aviation and space industry products to Russia, Downing Street said on Wednesday.

"Additional trade measures, also introduced today, will prevent UK exports of aviation or space-related items and technology to Russia, including related services such as insurance and reinsurance services," the UK government said in a statement.

According to the document, the UK authorities "laying new legislation today to make it a criminal offence for any Russian aircraft to fly or land in the UK."

"The ban includes any aircraft owned, operated or chartered by anyone connected with Russia or designated individuals or entities, and will include the power to detain any aircraft owned by persons connected with Russia," the UK government said in the statement.

Earlier Wednesday, UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that the UK authorities intend to detain any Russian aircraft that finds itself in the airspace of the UK.

"I have made it a criminal offence for ANY Russian aircraft to enter UK airspace and now HMG can detain these jets. We will suffocate Putin's cronies' ability to continue living as normal while thousands of innocent people die," Shapps said in Twitter.
