Work on elaborating principles of peacekeeping mission in Donbas to be continued

At a meeting of political directors of the Normandy Four's Foreign Ministries (Germany, France, Ukraine, Russia) in Berlin, the parties discussed the modalities of the future UN peacekeeping operation in the conflict zone in Donbas and agreed to continue work.

In fulfillment of the agreements reached during the Berlin meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Normandy Four on June 11, 2018, the first meeting of the MFA political directors took place in Berlin on July 26, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

"A substantive discussion took place on the modalities of the future peacekeeping operation under the UN mandate, which should contribute to the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the restoration of Ukraine's sovereignty over the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions," it says.

It is noted that "despite the existence of significant disagreements with the Russian side, the representatives of Ukraine, Germany, France and Russia agreed to continue work on determining the basic principles of the peacekeeping operation in the conflict zone."

"Among other things, it remains fundamental for the Ukrainian side that the mandate of the future operation should extend to the entire temporarily occupied territory, including the state Ukrainian-Russian border in the conflict zone, and to include the withdrawal of foreign armed formations, military equipment and mercenaries, and to promote peace in the region," the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reminded.
