Canada hopes for separate meeting with Russia, China on N. Korea issue

Canada hopes to have a separate meeting with Russia and China in Vancouver on the subject of North Korea, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said at a joint press conference with her Ukrainian counterpart, Pavlo Klimkin, in Kyiv on Thursday.

Freeland said China and Russia should be invited to a separate meeting in Vancouver, as Canada believed a conversation with those two countries would be useful.

Vancouver will play host to an international summit on North Korea on January 16, 2018, Freeland said. Japan, South Korea, and South Korea's allies will attend the event, she said.

North Korean conduct poses a risk to Canada from the geographical standpoint, which is why Canada supports the allies' call for imposing sanctions on Pyongyang, Freeland said.
