Tbilisi doesn't exclude Saakashvili's extradition to Georgia

The detention of ex-president of Georgia and former head of Odesa regional state administration, Mikheil Saakashvili, in Kyiv is a violation of the legislation of Ukraine, lawyer Beka Basilia has said, who defends Saakashvili's interests in the Georgian court.

"The actions of the Ukrainian authorities are so unlawful that they can extradite Saakashvili to Georgia, where several trials are conducted against him," the lawyer told journalists on Tuesday.

According to him, currently in an accelerated manner, cases are considered in the court over the excess of Saakashvili's official powers. In particular, the case of early pardon as president of Georgia for the duties of four detained police officers convicted of the murder of bank employee Sandro Girgvilani.

"The prosecutor's office bluntly stated that the verdict would be pronounced before the end of December. The processes in Ukraine suspiciously coincide with this trial against Saakashvili in Georgia," Basilia said.

Eka Beselia, the chairman of the legal committee of the Georgian parliament, told journalists, that the possible extradition of Saakashvili to Tbilisi can occur within the framework of bilateral interstate cooperation.

"As far as I know, the demand for the extradition of Saakashvili was sent by the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor's Office to the Ukrainian side. Earlier in Georgia, a court on one of the cases brought against him decided to detain him in case he appears on Georgian territory," said Beselia.
