Ten Georgians, one Iranian die in fire at 5-star hotel in Batumi - Georgian Interior Ministry

A fire at the Leogrand Hotel in Batumi, Georgia, killed 11 people, including ten Georgians and one citizen of Iran, the Georgian Interior Ministry reported on Saturday.

Another 21 people required hospitalization, the ministry said.

Among those who died in the fire is one firefighter, it said.

Ajarian Health Minister Zaal Mikeladze had told journalists earlier that five citizens of Turkey and one citizen of Israel were among those injured.

The fire at the Leogrand Hotel broke out on Friday evening. Participants in the Miss Georgia beauty pageant were among the guests of the hostel at the moment. Preliminary findings indicate that none of the contestants was harmed.

Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia told journalists it was found out there were some violations of fire safety standards at the hotel; in particular, the hotel lacked a fire escape.
