Parliament speaker calls on U.S. to provide lethal defensive weapons to Ukraine

Verkhovna Rada Chairman Andriy Parubiy has called on Washington to provide lethal defensive weapons to Kyiv.

"Today we had a strategic and constructive meeting with newly appointed U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Wess Mitchell. His visit is a reassurance of the U.S. support to Ukraine. I called on the U.S. State Department to provide lethal defensive weapons to Ukraine," Parubiy wrote on Twitter on November 15 after a meeting with Mitchell.

At the same time, the Ukrainian parliament's press service reported that during the meeting in Kyiv, the Verkhovna Rada speaker assured the U.S. diplomat of the support by Ukrainian parliamentarians of Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

"I can assure you that the overwhelming majority of people's deputies of the current convocation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine support the Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, cooperation with the United States and the European Union, and reforms in Ukraine," Parubiy said, while addressing Mitchell.

The meeting was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.
