Deputy Head of the Council of Europe's Office in Ukraine Olena Lytvynenko has said she hopes that access to archives in Ukraine will be improved.

"We are trying to support problematic issues in Ukrainian society in order to improve and bring them into line with the standards of the Council of Europe. Here we are talking about supporting the fulfillment by Ukraine of its obligations as a member state... We very much hope that access to archives will be improved and this will be common property for the whole society," she said at an international conference "Access to archives as part of the right to information" in Kyiv on Wednesday.

Lytvynenko also said that the archives, first of all, were the cultural heritage and memory of the nation.

"This is an opportunity to objectively assess the past, have a connection with the present and make objective decisions and plan the future," she said.
