Interior Ministry says NABU actions in 'backpack case' politically motivated

Ukraine's Interior Ministry has said actions by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine on Tuesday involving the search of premises belonging to the son of Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, Oleksandr, and former deputy head of the Interior Ministry Serhiy Chebotar are ground for a new information campaign directed against the Interior Minister.

"There are obviously domestic and foreign backers, whose intention is restoring the old corrupt system of 'mentorship' and backroom dealing. NABU is engaging in political - not legal - actions. This is unacceptable and requires immediate correction," the Interior Ministry's website said in a press release on Tuesday.

"During the tenure of the Interior Minister, untruthful information has been circulated against him and members of his family and close friends. Meanwhile, measures taken by the ministry to modernize and improve Ukraine's law-enforcement and legal systems, as well as to defend the state against Russian hybrid war have been undermined," the statement says.
