Talk of Ukraine's illegal supply of weapons to S. Sudan unsubstantiated - Turchynov

Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksandr Turchynov says he finds the reports by Amnesty International and media reports on the illegal supply of weapons to South Sudan to be incorrect.

"South Sudan is a country that is a member of the United Nations, it is a country recognized by Ukraine, it is a country that has an embassy in Ukraine. Today there are no UN restrictions or sanctions on this country, and it is therefore incorrect and unprofessional to say that Ukraine has breached any sanctions, because these sanctions simply don't exist," Turchynov told reporters in Kyiv on Thursday.

Ukraine observes all its international obligations and follows all the international agreements it has signed, he said.

The dissemination of information on the illegal supply of weapons by Ukraine to South Sudan is "an attempt to stop the beginning of military-technical cooperation with our strategic partners and inflict more damage, in this case, moral damage, on Ukraine," Turchynov said.

Turchynov also said Ukraine is not going to leave the arms market. "Ukraine will continue working in foreign arms markets, because it's not only the country's prestige, it's a real resource for our country, and it's a real impetus for the development of our defense industry, and we will not let Russian defense enterprises become the leader here. We will fight them, both on the front line and in foreign markets," Turchynov said.

On September 25, 2017, international NGO Amnesty International reported on Ukraine's involvement in the supply of weapons to South Sudan.
