Court finds Saakashvili guilty of illegally crossing Ukraine's border

Mostyska District Court in Lviv region has found leader of the Movement of New Forces party and former Odesa Regional Governor Mikheil Saakashvili guilty of illegally crossing Ukraine's state border.

"To find Mikheil Nikolozovich Saakashvili guilty of the illegal crossing of the state border of Ukraine," judge Yuriy Bilous said on Friday, September 22, while reading out the court ruling.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that according to the ruling, Saakashvili must pay a fine of 200 non-taxable minimums (UAH 3,400, or about $130).

Saakashvili was also ordered to pay a court fee of UAH 320.

The court ruling may be appealed in a higher court.

The politician himself did not attend the court session as he had meetings in Cherkasy region.

As reported, on September 10, Saakashvili crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border in the company of his supporters, who de facto forced their way into the territory of Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian authorities, 13 police officers and nine border guards were hurt in the incident.

On September 12, officials from the State Border Service gave Saakashvili in Lviv a protocol of illegal border crossing. The politician signed it, stating his objections.

A court hearing of the protocol started on September 18.
