Ukraine to table draft resolution on UN peacekeepers in Donbas after agreement with partners

Ukrainian First Deputy Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko has said that Ukraine will submit a written version of the initiative on the deployment of a UN peacekeeping force to the Donbas after agreeing with partner countries.

"The written initiative will be submitted when we can agree with our partners on the text that will be possible to adopt, not just to say that 'I'm a great peacemaker,' but to get this mission working," he told journalists before a government meeting on Wednesday, September 13.

He noted that the introduction of a "raw version" of the resolution by Russia was hampering Ukraine, which is currently in talks with its partners.

"We need to end the war in the east, and we believe that the UN should play a more active role, in particular [with regard to] our peacekeeping initiative, which President [Vladimir] Putin is now trying to intercept, putting forward his initiatives. We are not against authorship, but the main thing for us is to have a mission that would help disengage the sides and bring peace to the east," Prystaiko said.

He recalled that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko put forward this initiative in 2015.

According to him, the preparation of such a mission takes time as it requires funds and soldiers.
