Appeals court allows retail sale of alcohol in Kyiv at night

A ruling by Kyiv's Economic Court of Appeals, which upheld a Kyiv economic court ruling on the cancellation of a ban imposed by Kyiv City Council on the retail sale of alcoholic beverages in the Ukrainian capital from 23:00 to 10:00, has come into force.

The court ruling dated June 6 obliged Kyiv City Council to execute the decision by the administrative board of the Anti-monopoly Committee's Kyiv branch by repealing the No. 19/1023 decision dated September 22, 2016, on limiting the sale of alcoholic, low-alcohol beverages and beer in retail outlets in Kyiv depending on the parts of the day, the AMC's Kyiv branch said in an announcement on its website.

As reported, Kyiv City Council members on September 22, 2016, banned the sale by retailers of alcoholic and low-alcohol beverages in the territory of Kyiv from 23:00 to 10:00. The decision was backed by 86 council members.

That decision stipulated that the ban applied only to the sale of alcohol through retail outlets. The sale of alcoholic beverages and beer in cafes and restaurants at night was not prohibited.

Prior to that, on March 17, 2016, the Kyiv authorities outlawed the sale of strong drinks in kiosks.
