Ukraine-U.S. relations depend not on secretary of state but on entire Trump team

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin believes the future relations between Kyiv and Washington will depend not so much on the new state secretary of the U.S., but rather on the whole administration of president-elect Donald Trump.

"I see that the key figures within the Republican Party, within the transitional team, understand that a democratic Ukraine is in the U.S. interests and express their readiness to help Ukraine. We'll soon see what this team will ultimately look like… And it is not the head of the U.S. State Department, but the whole team, that matters, the team which will be in charge of foreign policy, national defense and global economy," he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Klimkin said he was also of an opinion that Russia will find it easier to work with the new U.S. presidential team. However, Kyiv will do its best to convey Ukraine's clear position to the new U.S. administration.

"It is taking long to form the future team in the U.S., but as soon as it is formed, and we hope this will take place in the coming weeks, briefings on the current situation will start and we on our part will do our best so that the future [U.S.] president and his team receive high-quality and detailed briefings concerning what is happening, as well as the context of Russia's intentions and tactics," Klimkin said.

The Ukrainian minister said diplomats are considering the possibility to arrange for a bilateral meeting between Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Trump during Poroshenko's visit to the U.S.
